INFORMATION:

(Washington DC) Latela Curatorial is proud to exhibit a collection of artworks entitled ‘Interiors’ by local artist Mills Brown. This exhibition includes both new and earlier artworks, created across multiple media including paintings, works on paper and three-dimensional sculptural/installation figures.

The paintings and collages in Interiors reflect a reverence for decorative patterns and domestic scenes. The camouflaged figures, many of them referencing photos from Mills’ childhood in South Carolina, disappear into their wallpapered environments. Any sense of intimacy that is conjured by the nostalgic patterns is threatened by vines, flowers, shapes and lines that overtake the frame. Overgrowth veils the figures, making it unclear whether they are receding or emerging. This ambiguity reflects Mills’ sense of incompleteness when considering a nostalgic picture of the past.

Mills Brown Artist Statement:

My work begins with a desire to understand and capture the feeling of a place. I create spaces that are personal and intimate, suggestive of memory, and ornamentally decorated.  The disjointed nature of collage inspires me to imbue a sense of dreamlike narrative into these places, with the intent to draw viewers inside. My work often considers the idea of home and reflects on my own childhood in South Carolina. I am particularly interested in the way that perceptions of home and childhood are altered in adulthood. Within each created environment I try to present a beautifully strange and magical place, but often with an edge of the uncanny.
